Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie is a stage play based on the Dear America book of the same name by Kristiana Gregory. It was commissioned by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and possibly performed by it. The play has been put on by other theaters in the United States.

Premise[]

Hattie Campbell and Pepper Lewis look back on their thirteen-year-old selves. In 1847, the girls leave Independence, Missouri with their families to travel on the Oregon Trail and settle out west.

    Production[]

    Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie was one of six plays commissioned by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in collaboration with Scholastic Entertainment. The script was written by Julie Jensen.[4] The play was performed by the Playwrights Theatre and Growing Stage from November 4 to 21, 2010 in Madison, New Jersey.[5] The Growing Stage continued to perform the play at its home theater in Netcong, New Jersey.[6] It was performed at the Coterie Theatre in Kansas City, Missouri from September 12 to 30, 2012.[7][8] The play was set to be performed at the University of Utah in 2020,[9] but was cancelled.[10]
