- A conflict within the United States between the Union states and the Confederate states. The cause of the conflict was over whether slavery would be permitted to expand into the western territories. When Abraham Lincoln, whom opposed the expansion of slavery, was elected president, several southern states succeeded and formed the Confederate states. This led to a four year long conflict fought mostly in the south.
