Biography[]

Early life[]

On May 18, 1942, Dawnie was born to Curtis and Loretta Johnson at Hadley Hospital in Hadley, Virginia. Her parents named her Dawn since she was born "right as the new day was dawning."[2] Her younger brother, Gunther "Goober" was born in 1945. From kindergarten, Dawnie attended Mary McLeod Bethune School.

Attending Prettyman Coburn[]

Later life[]

Personality and traits[]

Dawnie was intelligent, having the highest grades of the elementary division at Mary McLeod Bethune School.

She was regarded by others as a "tomboy." She preferred wearing dungarees over dresses, was "not scared of getting dirty," and was able to play baseball well. Dawnie admired the baseball player, Jackie Robinson. She also had a secret wish of playing for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.
