Eliza loved going to school and learning new things. Her teacher, Miss Croom, called her her "best pupil." Eliza harbored hopes of becoming a teacher and felt her dreams had been dashed when she started work at the mill. She began derisively calling herself "mill girl," believing that was all she would be.
