Prudence was born in 1761[1] to her parents, Edward and Martha Emerson. Her father operated a store in Green Marsh, Massachusetts, where Prudence attended Common School. She had one older brother, Walter, and four younger siblings, Jacob, Verity, Kate Emerson, and Alice.

Personality and traits[]
Prudence's mother joked about naming her Prudence since "there never was and never will be anything prudent about [her]." Her friend Abigail instead thought she should be named "Lively," and her brother jokingly said "Mouthful." Prudence was impulsive, doing or saying things without thinking them through. However, if she was calm, she was usually able to control herself.
