"Hattie's Home: The Diary of Hattie Middleton" is the eleventh and final story published in the Dear Canada book, Hoping for Home. It was written by Jean Little, whom penned several books in the series. The story was preceded by "Out of the Ashes."


"Hattie has lived her whole life in Formosa, though her parents are Canadian. When her family moves back to Canada, there is so much to notice, and so much that is different from the small island where she grew up."

Jean Little was a Canadian writer born in Formosa (now Taiwan). She wrote over fifty novels and picture books during her lifetime. Her books for Dear Canada include Orphan at My Door, Brothers Far from Home, If I Die Before I Wake, Exiles from the War, All Fall Down, and stories in A Season for Miracles, A Christmas to Remember, and A Time for Giving. "Hattie's Home" is based on Little's own arrival in Canada after living in Formosa for the first seven years of her life.[2]
