James "Jim" John Patrick Murphy (September 25, 1947 – May 1, 2022) is an American award-winning author. He has authored over thirty-five books, the majority being about American history. Murphy has written two Dear America books and two My Name Is America.

Murphy was born on September 25, 1947 in Kearny, New Jersey into an Irish-Italian family.[1] He attended Rutgers University and did his graduate studies at Radcliffe College. Murphy worked in juvenile publishing, until he left to work on Weird and Wacky Inventions (1978).

He married his second wife, Alison Blank, in 1987. They had two sons, Michael and Ben. On May 1, 2022, Murphy passed away at his home in Woodstock, New York.[1]
