Private Johnny Henderson (born c. 1844) was a Union Army soldier in G Company of the 122nd Regiment. He was good friends with fellow soldier James Pease. Johnny fought during the Battle of the Wilderness.

Biography[]

Early life[]

He was born sometime during 1844.[1] Johnny's father died when he was young. Him and his three sisters, including Sarah, were raised by their mother on their farm.

Civil War[]

Johnny joined G Company of the 122nd Regiment of the Union Army and fought in the Civil War. He fought alongside James during the Battle of the Wilderness in May 1864. After two weeks furlough, the pair returned to the front. Before the end of the war on April 9, 1865, they fought at Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Cedar Creek, and Appomattox Courthouse.

Later life[]

Johnny married a girl from a neighboring town and became a farmer. Every year, him and the other veterans of G Company met at the 122nd New York Volunteers reunion. He enjoyed telling stories about the Civil War, often exaggerating them.

Personality and traits[]

Johnny was good-natured as well as cheerful and loyal. James remarked that Johnny often had a smile on his face. He clashed several times with Charlie Shlep, which ended in many brawls. Johnny also defended James against Charlie's rude comments. He also enjoyed teasing James about Sarah.
