Prudence Emerson (born 1761)[1] was the eldest daughter of Edward and Martha Emerson.

Alice and Kate Emerson[]

Kate (born June 1, 1769)[2] and Alice Emerson (born July 1773)[3] were two daughters of Edward and Martha, and the younger sisters of Walter, Prudence, Jacob, and Verity. At age three, Kate caught a fever which made her blind. Prudence often looked after Kate and Alice, and described things for Kate.

Dolly and Seth Emerson[]

Dolly and Seth Emerson were the parents of Peter and Betsy. He owned and operated a store in Boston.

Walter Emerson was the eldest child of Edward and Martha.

Minor characters[]

  • Abigail Owens was Prudence Emerson's best friend. Her father was a Patriot. As tension rose between the Patriots and Loyalists, Abigail began to avoid Prudence when her father forbade her to speak to Loyalists.
  • Alice Henshaw, Emily Case, Hannah Williams, and Molly Hawthorne were classmates of Prudence whom came from Patriot families. They separated themselves from the girls of Loyalists families.
  • Mrs. Case, a neighbor of the Emersons and mother of Emily.
  • Charity Pratt, Dolly Pierce, Esther Parsons, and Mary Strong were Prudence's classmates whom were also Loyalists.
  • Dorcas was Emily's servant whom also lived with her.
  • Emily[5] ("Aunt") was Prudence's maternal aunt whom she referred to as "Madame Pinprick" (or "M.P.") in her journal. After lamenting Prudence's handwriting, she gave her an old book belonging to her late husband for Prudence to practice.
  • General Gage
  • George (died 1771)[1] was the husband of Emily whom suddenly died in his sleep.
  • George, the King of England. Patriots wished to govern themselves, instead of being under King George's laws.
  • Mrs. Hall was a teacher at the Common School, where she taught Prudence and the other girls from the village.
  • Mrs. Henshaw was the miller's wife in Green Marsh and mother of Nathan.
  • Jake, a village boy and the object of Molly Hawthorne's affections.
  • Jeptha (born c. 1761)[6]
  • Nathan Henshaw (born c. 1766)[4] was the son of Mrs. Henshaw. Prudence hit his hand when she saw him pulling the wings off of butterflies.
  • Mr. Owens was the father of Abigail. Being a Patriot, he ordered his daughter to stop associating with Loyalists.
  • Peter Emerson
  • Samuel (died October 6, 1774),[7] a rooster owned by the Emerson family. He had a fight with a hawk and won. Samuel later died, being "listless and slow" since the fight. Prudence was saddened by his passing.
