Madeline Beck[]
- Main article: Madeline Beck
Madeline Beck (born c. 1928),[1] also known as Maddie, was the only child of David and Mrs. Beck.
Supporting characters[]
Clara Rosenthal[]
Clara Rosenthal (born c. 1922)[2] was the daughter of Mrs. Rosenthal.
David and Mrs. Beck[]
David[3] and Mrs. Beck ("Dad" and "Mom") were the parents of Madeline. He was a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy. His job caused him to have to move his family around the country often. In September 1941, David was stationed on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific. Mrs. Beck and her daughter went to stay on Long Island, New York.
Johnny Vecchio[]
Johnny Vecchio was a classmate and later friend of Madeline. She described him as the "most admired boy in the eighth grade" with "black curly hair and sparkly brown eyes." He lived with his parents, whom worked at a cannery, his grandmother, and younger brother Bill.
Theo Hawkins[]
Theo Hawkins (born c. 1921)[2] was the son of Mrs. Hawkins.

- Bill Vecchio (born c. 1935)[4] was the younger brother of Johnny.
- Miss Burke, a retired teacher whom talked a lot.
- Mrs. Hawkins was Theo's mother and the owner of Mrs. Hawkin's Mansion-by-the-Sea, a boardinghouse on Long Island. She was hard of hearing.
- Maxine Stone was a classmate of Madeline whom described her as the "prettiest girl in our class." She started a group called the "Star Points" with four of her friends.
- Mr. O'Malley was Madeline's homeroom teacher.
- Mrs. Rosenthal was Clara's mother.
Epilogue characters[]
- Maddie Hawkins, the daughter of Theo Hawkins and Clara Rosenthal. She was named after their friend Madeline Beck.
