Not a Nickel to Spare: The Great Depression Diary of Sally Cohen is the nineteenth book in the Dear Canada series. It was published in May 2007 by Scholastic Canada. The book is the only book in the series written by Perry Nodelman.
- "Dedicated to the memory of my grandparents, Bessie and Samuel Berkan and Esther and Max Nodelman, who had the courage to leave the old country for a new home, and who somehow managed to raise their large families (six Berkan and eight Nodelman children) without a nickel to spare."
- "March 28, 1933
This morning in school one of the goyishe girls, Angelina, fainted right in the middle of History. She just keeled over and fell on the floor. Afterwards, she told Miss Douglas it was probably because she was hungry, because it was her turn to miss breakfast this morning. She said someone in her family always has to miss it because there isn't enough for them all. I feel so sorry for Angelina. We may not have much, but at least there's always a little bit for everybody. I wonder if the Depression is ever going to end."
