Jodie Hillyard was twelve-years-old when she won the Dear America Writing Contest. First-prize winner, Nicole Hillyard, is her sister. Hillyard was inspired to write about Japan because of her pen pal, whom she named the main character after. For research, she read books from the library and her own home. She also looked back at several Dear America books for ideas while writing. Hillyard wrote the story in three months.[1][2]

As a prize for winning the contest, her classroom received a visit from Kristiana Gregory and a collection of Dear America and My Name Is America books and films.[2]
