Book description[]

"The year 1900 was a momentous one for Kitty Barnes. Bubonic plague, the Black Death, was killing large numbers of people; the country was on the verge of becoming a federation; Kitty's brother was in Africa fighting in the Boer War; and Kitty was finding herself somewhat attracted to Reggie, the boy down the road."

"There's proclamations going up now on the walls round here saying, 'Plague is present in Sydney. It has been introduced by diseased rats and there is great danger of it spreading still further.'
Sydney, 1900. It is the beginning of a new era, as the Australian colonies are about to become a federation. It's also a dramatic year for Kitty and her family: bubonic plague, the Black Death, is sweeping through Sydney, and her brother Bertie is in Africa fighting in the Boer War. The world is changing, and Kitty records it all in her diary.
