Dedication[]
- "For Karleen, whose faith in my work has offered strength and courage, and who is a friend for all times.
Many thanks to Jane Green and Hilda Chaulk Murray for providing me with accommodation while I was in Newfoundland for research purposes. Gratitude in abundance to Sandy Bogart Johnston for her skilled and thoughtful editing, and for her love of the task. Also to Diane Kerner for those final comments which make a world of difference."
Book description[]
- "Friday, April 28, 1721
We have LAND! Land to our left (which Captain Jones has told me over and over I must call "to port"). What does it matter what I call it? I can see it. We are in a channel that is open. Ice is to our right still but LAND IS TO OUR LEFT.
Sunday, April 30, 1721
We are in a cove. Captain Jones has declared it "more than suitable." The men are fitting out several of the fishing boats so that they may row unto the land. I do not want to go. There are too many trees and it is dark beneath them.
All of a sudden I am like Mama. Mama says she would not "willingly set foot within this dreadful place, for all the riches in the world."
Reverend Jacobs's service today was one of thanksgiving. I did not know how to be thankful. I am too afraid."
